Selecting supply chain software in the AI era: Why functionality is no longer enough

For decades, supply chain software selections were largely won on functionality. The vendor with the strongest forecasting engine, inventory optimization logic or planning capabilities often came out on top.


Today, that approach is no longer enough. As AI reshapes the software market and new AI-native solutions emerge, selecting the right technology has become a strategic business decision rather than a purely functional one.


Organizations now face a different challenge: selecting not just software, but a technology ecosystem that can continuously evolve, innovate and create competitive advantage. This shift requires supply chain leaders to rethink how technology decisions are made.


AI is changing the rules of supply chain software selection


Leading software vendors are rapidly embedding AI into their platforms, while new AI-native players are entering the market with specialized solutions for demand sensing, planner copilots, supply chain visibility and autonomous decision-making. As a result, supply chain technology landscapes are becoming more hybrid, where core platforms, AI copilots, autonomous agents and specialist applications increasingly work together to support decision-making and execution.


The question is no longer whether AI will play a role in supply chain operations. The question is how organizations can build a technology landscape that allows them to continuously adopt new innovations as they emerge.


Strategy first, software second


One of the most common mistakes in software selection is starting with vendor demos instead of business strategy. Organizations often spend months comparing functionality before defining the capabilities they actually need to compete. Successful software selections start by understanding the (supply chain) elements that contribute to the overall business strategy. A vendor should understand the why behind the request to provide the best possible solution.


Key questions include:


  • Where do we want to differentiate: service, cost, agility or resilience?

  • Which planning and operational decisions should become AI-supported?

  • What data foundation is required to enable end-to-end visibility?

  • Which capabilities are strategic enough to justify best-of-breed solutions?

  • How should technology support future growth, omnichannel operations and supply chain resilience?

  • Only after answering these questions should the vendor discussion begin.


Six criteria for future-proof software selection


Leading organizations increasingly evaluate software across six dimensions.


  1. Business Value: How will this technology contribute to competitive advantage and business performance, while considering TCO?

  2. Data & Architecture: Can the solution serve as a foundation for future AI capabilities and seamless integration across the technology landscape?

  3. Vendor Innovation: Is the vendor investing and releasing fast enough to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving market?

  4. Functional Capabilities: Does the solution address today's and tomorrow’s planning and operational requirements?

  5. Adoption & Change Readiness: Will planners, analysts and operational teams embrace and trust the solution?

  6. Digital Sovereignty & Geopolitical Risk: How dependent will the organization become on a specific vendor, ecosystem or geographic region?


As AI becomes embedded throughout the technology stack, software selection is shifting from choosing the best functionality to choosing the best platform for continuous innovation.

Best-of-breed or integrated suite?

A critical strategic decision is whether to invest in an integrated supply chain platform or build a landscape of specialized solutions.


An integrated suite can provide a single environment across demand planning, supply planning, inventory management and financial planning, often simplifying integration and governance.


A best-of-breed approach may deliver deeper capabilities in areas such as forecasting, optimization, warehouse management or transportation management. However, it also requires stronger integration capabilities and a more mature architectural vision.


There is no universal answer.


The right choice depends on business strategy, operating model, existing technology landscape, data architecture and long-term ambitions. Organizations should therefore determine the role software should play in their future architecture before evaluating vendors.


Building the supply chain technology ecosystem of the future


The winners in supply chain technology will not be the organizations with the most advanced software today. They will be the organizations that build the strongest foundation for continuous innovation tomorrow.


In the AI era, software selection is no longer about choosing a tool. It is about choosing something that fits your overall IT architecture and sets you up for competitive advantage for years to come he question is no longer "Which software should we buy?" The question is "Which technology ecosystem will help us stay competitive over the next five years?”
